November 29th, 2026

As he’d promised, Albus visited Scorpius in rehab often. He visited Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. He had reduced his work hours, making more room for Emery as well. Albus knew full well it would be suspicious of him to take time out of his schedule for Scorpius but not for Emery. His shifts were now fourteen hours rather than over sixteen, from five to seven. He tried so hard to tell himself that feeling the need to work less and seeing Scorpius again weren’t correlated. For the most part, Albus believed himself.

Scorpius seemed like he was going to be alright. He had his bad days; days when Albus could tell he was silently screaming for a fix. For the most part, Scorpius seemed to be adjusting. Slowly, the color was returning to him and some days Albus swore Scorpius looked like there had never been anything wrong with him.

He checked in at the front desk and walked down the hall to Scorpius’ room. It was Friday and Albus was looking forward to the visit. He’d brought along some gobstones for them to play with, as Scorpius had requested on Wednesday. Why he wanted to play gobstones, Albus had no idea. It was a little beyond him why anyone would want to play a game where you’re squirted in the face with questionable fluid if you lose a point, but Scorpius had promised it would be fun.

Albus raked a hand through his hair to make it look presentable for Scorpius. Once he'd finished with his hair, he knocked on Scorpius' door. It didn’t take more than a few seconds for the door to open and reveal Scorpius.

“Hey,” he chirped, dragging Albus into his room and closing the door. Albus smiled, looking him over to see how he was.

“You look all… bright-eyed and bushy-tailed,” he said, unable to think of anything else to call it. Scorpius blushed a bit and shrugged.

“Just feel good, I guess,” he said. He leaned against the dresser and was quiet for a moment. He looked at the case in Albus’ hands and grinned again. “You brought the gobstones!”

“Yeah,” he said, shaking the case a bit. “This had better be worth it. Dad looked at me like I was loony when I asked for them.”

Scorpius laughed and took the case from him, sitting at the table with it and setting the game up. Albus took a seat across from him at the table, watching him get the gobstones ready. Scorpius really did look good today. His cheeks were a bit pink and he had a small smile on his face. He looked happy.

Gobstones was proving to be fun, even with the putrid substance squirted in their faces. Albus found that he was fairly good at the game, as he’d only been doused twice while Scorpius had been struck with the substance eight times.

“Damn it,” Scorpius grumbled, wiping his face. “This sucks.”

“You’re the one who wanted to play,” Albus said, smirking. Scorpius stuck his tongue out at Albus and playfully kicked his shin.

“Ow, jerk,” Albus complained, but was smiling. He kicked back and Scorpius squealed. That was when he felt it. That feeling in his stomach, the one that he could only describe as a flutter.

Albus remembered something from his fifth year of school then. It was April and they were in the Room of Requirement. Scorpius had said something cheeky about Albus being too keen. Albus had started to wrestle him, which dissolved into kissing. That was when they were first dating. Albus recognized the feeling in his stomach now; it was the same one he’d had then.

Abruptly, he stopped the kicking and cleared his throat. His cheeks reddened and he avoided Scorpius’ gaze. That feeling frightened him. He wasn’t supposed to be feeling that with Scorpius; he couldn’t be feeling that with Scorpius. He had Emery.

“Al,” Scorpius said tentatively. “What’s the matter?”

“Nothing,” Albus said, forcing the smile back to his face and looking up. Scorpius looked uncomfortable and nervous. “I’m alright.”

“Bollocks,” he said simply. Albus frowned and looked away again. “What’s the matter?” Scorpius repeated.

“Nothing,” Albus said again, shaking his head. “Don’t worry about it.”

“‘Don’t worry about it’ means there’s something, not nothing,” Scorpius said, crossing his arms. Albus didn’t like the way Scorpius’ blue eyes were drilling into him right now.

“Alright,” Albus snapped. “Look. If there is something, I’d have told you if I wanted you to know. So stop prying.”

“Alright,” Scorpius repeated, shifting. “Jeez. When did you get so shut-up?”

“I am not shut up,” Albus argued, sitting up straighter in his chair. “I just don’t feel compelled to share my every thought with you. Is that okay?”

“Fine,” Scorpius said, shrugging. “It’s fine. That’s cool; it even makes sense. Why would you tell me anything?”

Albus rolled his eyes and then another feeling hit him. He was so irritated by Scorpius, but also turned on. He tried to bite it down, but the physical attraction compared with the aggravation was a little overwhelming. He had to get rid of this. He’d have to see Scorpius less.

“Look,” he said, rubbing his eyes. “Don’t worry. It’s nothing worth mentioning anyway,” he explained. “I should go. I’ll see you on Tuesday.”

“But you always come on Monday, Wednes-”

“I know. I think maybe we should move it to… Tuesday and Friday.”

Scorpius’ face fell and he didn’t even try to hide it. “Oh,” he said quietly. “Okay. Yeah, alright. That’s cool.”

Albus didn’t like the feeling this was giving him now: guilt. He looked away from Scorpius and started to clean up the gobstones set.

“So, Tuesday,” Albus said, standing in the doorway. Scorpius faked a big smile and nodded.

“Yes. I’ll be here. See ya,” he said, waving and watching Albus down the hall. Once he was gone, Scorpius shut the door and leaned back against it, sliding down to the floor. “Fuck.”
